"Mongol"

So the other big epic Asian film I saw at the festival was "Mongol," which details the life of Genghis Khan before he conquered most of Asia. It's all based on factual info known about his life -- much of which comes from a very detailed secret biography written about Khan by the Mongols themselves. This document was only translated in the 20th century, and is discussed at length in the brilliant and entertaining book "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World," which you should all read immediately! But the movie follows the Mongol bio exactly, and was shot in Mongolia and Tajikistan, among other places.

It's a sweeping epic and a compelling story, and Khan is played by none other than Tadanobu Asano. Go see it!

Sure, you can watch a film that truly deserves to be seen widescreen on a mere television, which you can enjoy along with your lite beer, nonfat ice cream, decaf coffee, and sugar-free chocolate.

lol someday i'll start a whole thread arguing the pros and cons of home theater... but for now...i have to say for one that i went to see Harold & Maude in the theater recently, and although it was a theater with couches, beer, pizza etc it still sucked because the image quality of film was crap without artifact cleanup and the like. the only reason i see for theaters is the feeling of watching it with lots of people, or if you have a small crappy screen and your neighbors won't let you turn up the volume. Short of that situation, 9 out of 10 times I'll save the $$ and wait for video in three months from the release.
