Re: Fearless
Wed, September 20, 2006 - 12:06 AMOkay, I just watched the prieview screening today.
Without getting into any spoiler territory, the film definitely feels like Jet Li's farewell love song to martial arts films. There are certainly some fun fight scenes (Yuen Wo Ping choreographs, of course), and even a nod to other Jet Li films (specifically "Fist of Legend," and there are also a few moments that reminded me of the Fong Sai Yuk works). It has a really nice sword sequence in the middle. There's also a lot of nice period detail courtesy of CG that recreates turn-of-the-century China.
The center gets a bit bogged down in notes of beauty and redemptive pennance, but the ending is a solid tearjerking moment of martial arts honor-between-combatants. The film has humor, pathos, and ass-whupping. It will never be one of my favorite Jet Li films, but I certainly enjoyed it, and was happy to see it on a larger screen, and felt that it was better than "Hero" by far since it was much more old-school in its approach.
Check it out. -

Re: Fearless
Wed, October 11, 2006 - 12:40 PMSo I just saw it last night.
Ever since Romeo Must Die I haven't had much faith in Jet Li's acting, but overall I thought the acting in the entire cast was overdramatic, most particularly the kids. Seeing how this is meant to be a more or less serious movie, it didn't have quite the effect as when it is meant to be a farce. Some nice fight scenes for sure, but nobody seems to make movies these days with fighting scenes shown in real time anymore, which is always a disappointment for me (Matrix ruined it forever, I *hate* slow-motion fights). Some of the worst CG I have seen in a while (look at the water/dragonflies).
Very typical storyline, although laid out well. Once you watch the opening sequence, you *must* stay till the end, no matter how annoying you find the kids. Smart move on that part.
Not the worst movie, I was more annoyed with House of Flying Daggers (*duck*), but found this one rather silly. Still it was refreshing to watch a martial arts movie in the theater (last time I did that was Crouching Tiger). -

Re: Fearless
Wed, October 11, 2006 - 1:05 PMYou're actually reviewing acting in a martial arts film? If that were one of my criteria, I'd never watch them. -

Sat, October 14, 2006 - 5:13 AMHey Shaolin Soccer had FABULOUS acting! -

Re: Fearless
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 6:30 PMI wouldn't call "Shaolin Soccer" purely a martial arts film, since it's a comedy. And Stephen Chow is a GOD. My giant stack of Chow VCDs tells you how I feel about him. His best by far, IMHO, is "God of Cookery," one of the funniest films ever made. -

Re: Fearless
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 7:38 PMI do agree on the God of Cookery, and was shocked to find out that Turkey is the same girl from the mustachio'ed team in Shaolin Soccer. I also treasure Stephen Chow's moment with his dog in Glorious. -

Re: Fearless
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 10:06 PMTurkey is played by Karen Mok, who's in tons of movies. She's not only very pretty, but she's got great comic timing. -

Re: Fearless
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 12:44 AMYeah I found that out after I noticed her voice when running Shaolin Soccer in the background, then of course I had to do the imdb research. She speaks how many different languages? Wouldn't have guessed that she wasn't all Chinese. Very talented one.

Had to chance to see it this weekend.
Very good film. People were clapping and crying at the end. Over all I really did enjoy it.
And if I have not lost my mind yet, there is a scene where he's topless, getting his hair washed by a girl.

Re: Fearless
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 2:14 PMSince we are talking about Jet Li,
I fund out he worked on "Rogue" (post-production)
and rumor has it that he is working with Jacky Chan on a project.
What it is, I don't know... or know if the rumor is true.
Maybe someone here might shed some light on it?

Re: Fearless
Wed, March 7, 2007 - 1:04 PMHmm I have mixed feelings about this one. I think I should have watched it in the theater for one thing as watching the home dvd probably wasn't the same for this one.
I liked it but wasn't moved as much as all the hype made me think I would be. Overall Hero is 3x better if you ask me and I am sad that this is Jet's last movie in the vein.
